About Bristol

Brunel's Suspension Bridge. Courtesy of Bristol Cuty CouncilJohn Betjeman, former Poet Laureate of England, said the city was "The most beautiful, interesting and distinguished city in England". Bristol's appeal arises from its unique combination of features. Since its founding as ancient Brigstowe, the city's thousand-year history has seen it as a major port - not least the one from which John Cabot set sail for the New World in 1497 - as a centre for the slave trade in less enlightened times, and as the site for Brunel's great engineering achievement, the Clifton Suspension Bridge. The SS Great Britain, another of Brunel's firsts (the first steel-hulled ocean-going steamship) has found its final resting place in Bristol.

Alongside a distinguished history, Bristol boasts a newly-modernized dockside area featuring the WildScreen complex, an Imax cinema, the Exploratory and a planetarium, as well as the well-known arts complexes at the Watershed and the Arnolfini Gallery. These new facilities complement its long-standing history as a theatrical centre, embodied in the Theatre Royal and The Old Vic. Bristol hosts two universities, and is a major UK industrial and engineering centre, especially for the aerospace industry.

Bristol is surrounded by some of the most varied and beautiful countryside in the UK, including the spectacular Avon and Cheddar Gorges. In recent years, Bristol has also established itself as a major UK centre for hot air ballooning, the annual International Balloon Fiesta being one of the major events of its kind in the world.
